Global Outlook: China’s unemployment rate may hit 10 percent this year

In The Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest global outlook video, Agathe Demarais, Dan Wang and Imogen Page-Jarrett discuss the outlook for the global economy in light of the coronavirus pandemic and the impact of the outbreak on unemployment in China.

The novel coronavirus pandemic, which was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has spread rapidly to all corners of the globe in the last few months, leaving most countries under stringent lockdown measures. Imogen Page-Jarret looks at when these measures could be lifted, and what they mean for both the global economy and specific business sectors.

Alongside this, Dan Wang takes a closer look at the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on China’s unemployment. Detailed work conducted by The EIU’s Access China team predicts that China’s unemployment rate may hit 10% in 2020, with the services and exports sectors set to be hit the hardest.
