Global Outlook: Coronavirus jeopardises US-China truce

In The Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest global outlook video, Agathe Demarais, Nick Marro and Matthew Oxenford discuss the outlook for US-China relations and Brexit in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Our outlook for US-China relations at the start of 2020 was cautiously optimistic, based on the limited trade deal that was signed in January. Nick Marro explains why the pandemic has undermined any cause for optimism. We do not expect the trade deal to fall through, but relations have soured as US president Donald Trump tries to shift the blame for the coronavirus-induced recession towards China.

Turning to Europe, the pandemic delayed UK-EU Brexit talks for over a month. Matthew Oxenford provides an update on where UK-EU trade negotiations currently stand, the likelihood of a no-deal, and what the UK economic outlook looks like beyond 2021.
